There was a time when we couldn’t wait to get home from school. Of course, we were not unusual, for all children yearn for that moment, but this was for a special occasion. Dark Shadows would come on about that time. To miss it, well, would be bad. No goofing around, on the walk home from school, but a mad dash.
A soap opera for teens, it what it was. Day to day, week to week, and on Fridays we would be left hanging. We’d have to wait the whole weekend, to see what would happen next.
Barnabas Collins was the vampire that we all loved. In normal circumstances, we might be afraid, but we would all root for Barnabas. The idea of him being found out, could not happen. We waited for him to leave his coffin, so that we could watch him walk among the living, until the sun came up.
I hadn’t thought about Dark Shadows in a long time. Years ago, I re-watched and enjoyed it. There are some things that just stick with you. The recent passing of Jonathan Frid, brought the flood of memories back. Gee, he was 87 years old. I can still see him roaming around Colinswood. In the show he lived there a long time ago, came back, and to his fans, he is still there.
There have been vampires before Barnabas, and plenty of them after, but, he is the one that I fondly remember. The cape the cane, the picture of the “ancestor” on the wall. A time when all things could not be explained, and we loved them anyway.
Mystery, was the key word, which also reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock. Of course, that would be another story. I saw the picture of Sir Anthony Hopkins, who will be playing the master of suspense. I’m just like that kid that cannot wait to get home from school, except this time it will be after work. My seat at the theater is already reserved. Just have to dig up the patience, to wait, until the movie is released.
It looks like no matter how old we get, it is always a wonder to have something to look forward to. “Good Evening”, has just been added to the list.
“A fond farewell to bid-
To our favorite vampire, Barnabas Collins aka Jonathan Frid.”

They stood straight and tall-
As a pair, they had their own call.
.
They would work together, as a pair-
They stood grand, without much care.
.
And then they would be moved around
facing front and back, and east and west-
Depending on the situation, depending on
whether or not, they passed the test.
.
Sometimes they would be fashionedly be
dressed in aluminum foil-
For some reason or another, it would perfect
their toil.
.
Without their assistance, the situation could
become dire-
They worked 24/7, they never did tire.
.
But, then came the day, when they had to
be replaced-
Never thought it would happen, but retirement
for them, had to be faced.
.
Technology had caught up with them, and
there was no more use for those rabbit ears-
You know the ones on top, of the TV, that
kept the picture crystal clear, for so many years.
.
They stood straight and tall-
As a pair, they had their own call.

Whenever I get a chance I love to watch
The Waltons. It’s not just the adventures
that they involve themselves in, a lot of
times it is that sitting down to that dinner
table that interests me.
The long wooden table with the fresh table
cloth takes care of this family with room
left for a guest.
It seems like it would take an awful lot of
food and cooking to feed this family on
Walton’s Mountain, but show after show
they manage to do just that.
Grandma Walton has been seen picking the
green beans, Mama works out in the garden,
and one of the children tends to the chicken
house.
One thing that is apparent is that there is
always a plate of bread on the table and you
hear someone say pass that butter.
Surely it is real butter. You know the kind
that was churned on the porch. One can
imagine Grandma Walton baking that
bread and then the family spreading on
that delicious butter. Makes a good filler
too.
The other night the family had company,
and right after dinner they went outside
to enjoy their dessert. Cut pieces of water-
melon were shared by all.
As I said before it took a lot of food and
cooking to feed this family, but they
worked as a team and shared the burden.
There were no fast food places to ease
this burden. It was just a matter of fact.
“Simple with hard work, but what a joy-
When the day ended and we heard good
night John Boy.”
