Eighteen minutes is all it took-
As we step back for a moment,
to take a quick look.
Santa Ana, figuring that Sam Houston was
cornered, decided to give his army a rest-
Which gave Sam Houston, time to put his
suprise attack to the ultimate test.
Santa Ana’s lack to post a lookout-
Also put his chances to win, at a doubt.
Silently across the high grass plain-
Sam Houston prevailed to cause the sleeping
soldiers much pain.
With 800 men at his side-
Remember the Alamo, and Remember Goliad,
was utterly cried.
Hand to hand combat quickly went into action-
With much casualty on the Mexican side being done.
630 of them died, 208 wounded, and 730 taken prisoner-
With only 9 Texans killed, and 26 wounded, did occur.
Santa Ana fled and was later captured-
While Sam Houston ended up with a wounded ankle,
and a hero’s title that through time has endured.
April 21, 1836 is the day that paved the way for
Texas to become an independent country-
One in which is still celebrated, to this day, for all to see.
At the San Jacinto Battlegrounds the scene is replayed
over again-
By the desendants of those who fought the battle that
happened way back then.
18 minutes is all it took-
On a high grass battlefield where strenght was fierce, and
the courage was never shook.
