Modern Mother Goose-On The Loose (Seventy Years Ago During The Christmas Season)

I was reading an article about how folks used to celebrate

Christmas back in the old days.  Seventy years ago things

were quite different.

.

Everyone still gathered round to listen to the radio. The

whole family tended to listen to the same music, and of

course there was no such thing as social media, in any

form or fashion.

.

To go to Grandmother’s was a tradition that had been

carried out for many generations. No one made giblet

gravy like she did. Even if you didn’t like her cooking you

didn’t have much of a choice, for she was the one doing

the cooking, and there were no take out places.

.

Everyone was still heavily involved in shopping for Christmas,

but they tended to wait a moment, until at least Thanksgiving

was over, and the bird had been picked clean. Later on Black

Friday appeared and now we cannot even wait for that moment.

.

Things have certainly changed over the years, but many things

also remain the same. We still put up a pine tree , decorate

it, and put presents under the tree. We cook a ham and enjoy

the sweets that are made for the season.

Of course, things did get easier for the elder generation. The ones

before that required hunting for meat and doing all the prep

work.  Everything was made by hand, with much creativity.

“Back in the old days-

Things were both alike and different, in many ways.”

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Modern Mother Goose-On The Loose # 694 (The Wee Present)

The present was small-

You could hardly see it at all.

.

It had been wrapped with care-

With not one single paper tear.

.

Gently placed under the tree-

Until Christmas morning, it would

sit there, and look pretty.

.

Other gifts would follow and be placed

under the same Christmas tree, ever

so green

Until the wee one, could no longer

seen.

.

And, on Christmas morning, as the children

rushed in, with their thoughts fully immersed-

The big presents were grabbed, they were

opened first.

.

Almost forgetting the littlest one-

The one that turned out to be the best,

the one that was the most fun.

.

The present was small-

You could hardly see it at all.

Modern Mother Goose-On The Loose # 205 (An Innocent Spring)

The springtime came and the bulbs
began to sprout-
It had happened for the last 21 years,
so I had no doubt.

That they would return as they have
every single spring-
The purple blooms amongst the green
leaves, has become a traditional thing.

First, the green leaves come up and the
blooms follow behind-
A lovely bunch of flowers is what I always
eventually find.

But, this year was different, for as I saw them
standing tall-
When I got up closer, it wasn’t that way at all.

The outer ring was all that stood straight-
While the ones in the middle, didn’t look all
that great.

It looked like someone, or something had
laid them flat-
I was amazed about the situation, and
thought, well how about that?

And then I realized it was my daughter and
her friends who had done this particular act-
I could have assumed that a little courtesy is
what they lacked.

I could have gotten upset and thrown a fit-
But then I looked at the situation again, from
where a childs’ mind sits.

Only young once, the little idle minds, saw so
much fun-
In making this area a play place, in the shade
away from the sun.

A place to imagine, a place to hide-
Couldn’t have done it better myself, had I
tried.

The daughter and her friends will grow up and
one day move away-
And at another time, on another spring day-

I’ll look at the blooms, and wish she were still
around-
To play, in the blooms again, as if they were
once again new found.

The children grow up, and lose the innocence
of imagination of play-
But, I’ll still see them, in the blooms, on any
given spring day.

The springtime came and the bulbs
began to sprout-
It had happened for the last 21 years,
so I had no doubt.

Three Ways To Get That Perfect Job (2010)

1. Present yourself well.
2. Have an excellent resume.
3. Be lucky enough to have Mom or Dad working upstairs.

===========================

Networking for the children-

Is a service that has been provided

since way back when.

Modern Mother Goose-On The Loose # 765

She could write-

She could make life bright.

.

She wrote better than some-

For her the words would just come.

.

She wrote about what went on-

She wrote about those who were gone.

.

She wrote about the future and the past-

She wrote about what she had read and

amassed.

.

She kept on writing until her death-

She kept on writing until her very last breath.

.

She could write-

She could make life bright.

Modern Mother Goose-On The Loose # 848 (Layaway Past and Still Present)

Looks like the holidays are about to get underway-

So, that means it is about time to tend to that layaway.

.

Of course, things have changed, but some remain the same-

Like back in the day, a favorite toy, a favorite game.

.

Monopoly, to know-

The one where you collect $200, after you pass go.

.

Crayons, to color, from the heart-

Only a paper needed, to get that start.

.

Play-Doh, to acrue-

To form, and then let harden as a statue.

.

The Spirograph, where the lines swirl-

To take a line, into complete whirl.

.

Lincoln Logs to build over and over

again-

A barn, a fence, a complete family cabin.

.

Many childhood books to pick over and

remember-

That would be enjoyed reading, in the

month, of December.

.

Silly Putty, to press-

With so many shapes, to address.

.

And, of course, we all know-

What we’ve done with LEGO.

.

Etch A Sketch, to design-

And, create, whatever is on the mind.

.

Hot Wheels, always had their place-

So many collected requiring a case.

.

Skates, on the sidewalk, or street-

One by one, or two to compete.

.

And, Mr. Potato Head, who is

always in re-arrange-

Wait, I’ve got one more thing to change.

.

Always wonderful, to have on hand-

Is that special board, to make one’s way

through Candyland.

.

Looks like the holidays are about to get underway-

So, that means it is about time to tend to that layaway.
