Modern Mother Goose-On The Loose (Seventy Years Ago During The Christmas Season)

I was reading an article about how folks used to celebrate

Christmas back in the old days.  Seventy years ago things

were quite different.

.

Everyone still gathered round to listen to the radio. The

whole family tended to listen to the same music, and of

course there was no such thing as social media, in any

form or fashion.

.

To go to Grandmother’s was a tradition that had been

carried out for many generations. No one made giblet

gravy like she did. Even if you didn’t like her cooking you

didn’t have much of a choice, for she was the one doing

the cooking, and there were no take out places.

.

Everyone was still heavily involved in shopping for Christmas,

but they tended to wait a moment, until at least Thanksgiving

was over, and the bird had been picked clean. Later on Black

Friday appeared and now we cannot even wait for that moment.

.

Things have certainly changed over the years, but many things

also remain the same. We still put up a pine tree , decorate

it, and put presents under the tree. We cook a ham and enjoy

the sweets that are made for the season.

Of course, things did get easier for the elder generation. The ones

before that required hunting for meat and doing all the prep

work.  Everything was made by hand, with much creativity.

“Back in the old days-

Things were both alike and different, in many ways.”

Modern Mother Goose-On The Loose # 205 (An Innocent Spring)

The springtime came and the bulbs
began to sprout-
It had happened for the last 21 years,
so I had no doubt.

That they would return as they have
every single spring-
The purple blooms amongst the green
leaves, has become a traditional thing.

First, the green leaves come up and the
blooms follow behind-
A lovely bunch of flowers is what I always
eventually find.

But, this year was different, for as I saw them
standing tall-
When I got up closer, it wasn’t that way at all.

The outer ring was all that stood straight-
While the ones in the middle, didn’t look all
that great.

It looked like someone, or something had
laid them flat-
I was amazed about the situation, and
thought, well how about that?

And then I realized it was my daughter and
her friends who had done this particular act-
I could have assumed that a little courtesy is
what they lacked.

I could have gotten upset and thrown a fit-
But then I looked at the situation again, from
where a childs’ mind sits.

Only young once, the little idle minds, saw so
much fun-
In making this area a play place, in the shade
away from the sun.

A place to imagine, a place to hide-
Couldn’t have done it better myself, had I
tried.

The daughter and her friends will grow up and
one day move away-
And at another time, on another spring day-

I’ll look at the blooms, and wish she were still
around-
To play, in the blooms again, as if they were
once again new found.

The children grow up, and lose the innocence
of imagination of play-
But, I’ll still see them, in the blooms, on any
given spring day.

The springtime came and the bulbs
began to sprout-
It had happened for the last 21 years,
so I had no doubt.

I Looked Out The Window And What DId I See? (2007)

  • I looked out the window and what did I see?
But a glimpse of a time, that used to be.
    .
The little white house was freshly painted and still wet-
The little flowers that were to surround the house, hadn’t been planted yet.
    .
The fig tree was only a little bitty sprout-
The iceman passed by the house and waved, while on his regular route.
    .
A young woman walked through the yard with her three little girls-
With her husband by her side, things were looking up in the world.
    .
A new home, on 1/2 an acre, for all five-
A brand new start, always makes one feel alive.
    .
A three room house with an outhouse to boot-
They would no longer wander, for they had finally found a place to root.
    .
The children played in the flower filled yard, and eventually grew up, and moved away-
The younger woman and her husband, grew older, day by day.
    .
The fig tree bloomed, and bore much fruit every year-
When the husband passed away, the old woman grieved, and shed many a tear.
    .
The paint on the house had taken a heavy beating, from the years of weather-
The frail old woman, one day, just didn’t get any better.
    .
The yard grew up and the house eventually had to be torn down-
All that was left, was the large fig tree filled with birds, making wonderful chirping sounds.
    .
As I looked out the window, I saw how it used to be-
The memories of my Great-Grandmother, in her fruit of life, in another century.
