Modern Mother Goose-On The Loose # 663 (The Old Neighborhood Store)

It was always filedl with stir-

That neighborhood store, on the corner.

.

Mother would always send Sandy

to buy some eggs-

She’d walk over there with her

toothpick legs.

.

Or perhaps one day, it might be

some bread-

Sandy would get whatever Mother

wanted and said.

.

The best part for Sandy-

Of course, was looking at that ja,r of

candy.

.

And, every once in a while she was

able to get a piece-

An action she hoped would never cease.

.

Sandy is grown now and remembers so

very well-

That corner grocery, with so many tales

to tell.

.

Thank goodness Mother took a picture of

it long ago-

For it is now an empty space, where much

grass does grow.

.

She can still picture herself with the skinny

legs making that trip-

Rewarded with a piece of candy, as a tip.

.

It was always filled with stir-

That neighborhood store, on the corner.

Halloween in 2003

Orange and black is the color this month. the cool weather is upon us and before too long we will be experiencing those shorter days.

Fall festivals and/or halloweening is on the menu. kids just love to think about what they are going to wear and the fun that they will have.
I can remember as a child getting out of school and hardly being able to finish eating my dinner knowing that the night had come.

Surely I was going to get a bagful as I went house to house. we used to eat popcorn balls that were homemade. can you imagine that? We didn’t know what house they came from, but ate them anyway because back in those days no harm could come to us.

Of course we have to be more careful today, but the fun is still there. the makeup and the costumes let the children be whomever they want to be for the night.

Some are scary figures while many others are just downright fun. I’ve seen my grandchildren dress as the teletubbies and some Disney characters. one of my grandsons was a pirate one year and the way that his hat was made reminded me of Napoleon.

My husband used to dress real scary back in the old days but with the little ones we don’t want them to get scared so he has had to tone it down quite a bit.

One year I decided not to dress up at all and I still got a compliment. a lady came up to me and said, “that is amazing what you did with your hair!” I guess that my hair can get out of hand every once in a while. all I had done is brush it so you can go figure.
I see the candy corn and all the games that amber and my grandchildren are going to play. this is the season for the little ones and a lot of fun they do have.

I’m looking forward to seeing all the children around town as they sport their costumes. there is just no other holiday like this one.

“Fun is one thing
that does not lack-
In this exciting
season of orange and
black!”

Modern Mother Goose-On The Loose # 768 (Goodbye Barnabas Collins)

To rush home from school-

Was a major golden rule.

.

For the favorite show would be on-

You know about the one that had to

be in by dawn.

.

The scary music, the strange scenario-

When I got home, I knew where to go.

.

In front of the TV with the rabbit ears-

Usually at the thought of a vampire, there

are many fears.

.

But, in the case of Barnabas Collins, the idea

was sought-

That he could keep his secret, that he wouldn’t

get caught.

.

For he was a likable fellow, despite what he had

become-

Maybe not too all, but a plentiful sum.

.

We looked forward to the night, as it was when-

He would make his appearance, and come out

of his coffin.

.

That was many years ago, but the memory is still

vivid-

Of Mr. Jonathan Frid, playing Barnabas Collins,

quite livid.

.

To rush home from school-

Was a major golden rule.

Modern Mother Goose-On The Loose # 205 (An Innocent Spring)

The springtime came and the bulbs
began to sprout-
It had happened for the last 21 years,
so I had no doubt.

That they would return as they have
every single spring-
The purple blooms amongst the green
leaves, has become a traditional thing.

First, the green leaves come up and the
blooms follow behind-
A lovely bunch of flowers is what I always
eventually find.

But, this year was different, for as I saw them
standing tall-
When I got up closer, it wasn’t that way at all.

The outer ring was all that stood straight-
While the ones in the middle, didn’t look all
that great.

It looked like someone, or something had
laid them flat-
I was amazed about the situation, and
thought, well how about that?

And then I realized it was my daughter and
her friends who had done this particular act-
I could have assumed that a little courtesy is
what they lacked.

I could have gotten upset and thrown a fit-
But then I looked at the situation again, from
where a childs’ mind sits.

Only young once, the little idle minds, saw so
much fun-
In making this area a play place, in the shade
away from the sun.

A place to imagine, a place to hide-
Couldn’t have done it better myself, had I
tried.

The daughter and her friends will grow up and
one day move away-
And at another time, on another spring day-

I’ll look at the blooms, and wish she were still
around-
To play, in the blooms again, as if they were
once again new found.

The children grow up, and lose the innocence
of imagination of play-
But, I’ll still see them, in the blooms, on any
given spring day.

The springtime came and the bulbs
began to sprout-
It had happened for the last 21 years,
so I had no doubt.

Modern Mother Goose-On The Loose (Flowers Gone Flat)

THE SPRINGTIME CAME AND THE BULBS BEGAN TO SPROUT-

IT HAS HAPPENED FOR THE LAST 17 YEARS, SO I HAD NO DOUBT.

.

THAT THEY WOULD RETURN AS THEY HAVE EVERY SINGLE SPRING-

THE PURPLE BLOOMS AMONGST THE GREEN LEAVES, HAS BECOME A TRADITIONAL THING.

.

FIRST THE GREEN LEAVES COME UP AND THE BLOOMS FOLLOW BEHIND-

A LOVELY BUNCH OF FLOWERS IS WHAT I ALWAYS EVENTUALLY FIND.

.

BUT THIS YEAR WAS DIFFERENT FOR AS I SAW THEM STANDING TALL-

WHEN I GOT UP CLOSER, IT WASN’T THAT WAY AT ALL.

.

THE OUTER RING WAS ALL THAT STOOD STRAIGHT-

WHILE THE ONES IN THE MIDDLE DIDN’T LOOK ALL THAT GREAT.

.

IT LOOKED LIKE SOMEONE OR SOMETHING HAD LAID THEM FLAT-

I WAS AMAZED AT THE SITUATION AND THOUGHT, WELL, HOW ABOUT THAT.

.

AND THEN I REALIZED IT WAS MY DAUGHTER AND HER FRIENDS WHO HAD DONE THIS PARTICULAR ACT-

I COULD HAVE ASSUMED THAT A LITTLE COURTESY IS WHAT THEY LACKED.

.

I COULD HAVE GOTTEN UPSET AND THROWN A FIT-

BUT THEN I LOOKED AT THE SITUATION AGAIN FROM WHERE A CHILDS’ MIND SITS.

.

ONLY YOUNG ONCE THE LITTLE IDLE MINDS SAW SO MUCH FUN-

IN MAKING THIS AREA A PLAY PLACE IN THE SHADE AWAY FROM THE SUN.

.

A PLACE TO IMAGINE, A PLACE TO HIDE-

COULDN’T HAVE DONE IT BETTER MYSELF, HAD I TRIED.

.

MY DAUGHTER AND HER FRIENDS WILL GROW UP AND ONE DAY MOVE AWAY-

AND AT ANOTHER TIME ON ANOTHER SPRING DAY.

I’LL LOOK AT THE BLOOMS AND WISH SHE WERE STILL AROUND-

TO PLAY IN THE BLOOMS AGAIN AS IF THEY WERE ONCE AGAIN NEW FOUND.

.

THE CHILDREN GROW UP AND LOSE THE INNOCENCE OF IMAGINATION AT PLAY-

BUT I’LL STILL SEE THEM IN THE BLOOMS ON ANY GIVEN SPRING DAY.

.

THE SPRINGTIME CAME AND THE BULBS BEGAN TO SPROUT-

IT HAS HAPPENED FOR THE LAST 17 YEARS, SO I HAD NO DOUBT.

Irene (2014)

I remember when you set the table-
Looking good, as best as one was able.
.
I remember you standing in the kitchen preparing the turkey-
It was huge and you made it look as simple as it could be.
.
I remember you making giblet gravy-
To go with the dressing that was delicious and fluffy.
.
I remember your complete acceptance, and making 3 generations
feel like they were number one-
Like an angel on earth, to properly get that job done.
.
I remember the whole house smelling like a favorite bakery-
And decorated by black olives and of course cranberry.
.
I remember you crying whenever all sat down to eat-
Each and every family member, in their special seat.
.
I remember you saying that you were crying because of
Thanksgiving past-
For all of the family members, that were gone, and of
the memories that you had amassed.
.
For you too had the same memories that I am sharing today-
For when the holidays come around, we all remember the
special ones who are in Heaven including you, that have gone away.
.
It is now my time look back and remember, and create
memories too-
Thank you for sharing a piece of my life, for thinking of you,
always helps me to manage my way through.
.
One last thing I remember all of those dishes that had to be
washed and put away-
I don’t think that will ever change, on any given Thanksgiving Day.

.

I remember when you set the table-
Looking good, as best as one was able.
