I was reading an article about how folks used to celebrate
Christmas back in the old days. Seventy years ago things
were quite different.
.
Everyone still gathered round to listen to the radio. The
whole family tended to listen to the same music, and of
course there was no such thing as social media, in any
form or fashion.
.
To go to Grandmother’s was a tradition that had been
carried out for many generations. No one made giblet
gravy like she did. Even if you didn’t like her cooking you
didn’t have much of a choice, for she was the one doing
the cooking, and there were no take out places.
.
Everyone was still heavily involved in shopping for Christmas,
but they tended to wait a moment, until at least Thanksgiving
was over, and the bird had been picked clean. Later on Black
Friday appeared and now we cannot even wait for that moment.
.
Things have certainly changed over the years, but many things
also remain the same. We still put up a pine tree , decorate
it, and put presents under the tree. We cook a ham and enjoy
the sweets that are made for the season.
Of course, things did get easier for the elder generation. The ones
before that required hunting for meat and doing all the prep
work. Everything was made by hand, with much creativity.
“Back in the old days-
Things were both alike and different, in many ways.”

I peaked into the window, only to see-
A Christmas gathering that included the entire family.
Grandma and Grandpa were sitting together looking sweet-
Aunt Violet, in the corner, with her dress pressed so neat.
.
Barbara and the children were at the piano singing a song-
Even Uncle Jerry could be heard singing along.
.
The cousins, Maurine and Kay Lynn, from far away, they came-
For without them there, things just wouldn’t have felt the same.
.
A tree was decorated and twinkling bright-
Many, many, presents, under the tree were in clear sight.
.
The table was set and when it was time to eat-
Every family member would properly take their respective seat.
.
It was a time to get together, a special time indeed-
With the birth of Jesus, taking a lead.
.
For also underneath the Christmas tree was a manger that stood out-
This family knew what the true meaning of Christmas was all about.
.

We knew that the colors red and green-
Would appear, on the holiday scene.
.
And, they have for they are everywhere-
On the streets, in that package wrapped with care.
.
In the stores, in the house-
Even worn on a pin, by the spouse.
.
Highlighted by elves-
Sported mighty, on the shelves.
.
At school, on the wall-
In the eatery, down the hall.
.
Children love the colors too-
Coloring pictures, through and through.
.
Highlighting the Christmas tree-
Shining on those bags used during
a holiday shopping spree.
.
We knew that the colors red and green-
Would appear on the holiday scene.

The Christmas fudge went first-
As soon as I saw it, I knew that I was cursed.
.
One piece after another-
The whole familiy, including the sister and the brother.
.
And, then we came to see-
The empty plate, that included the brownie.
.
Next went the candy-
One more piece, to eat, always came in handy.
.
And, as all of this was going on-
Not one piece, of the fruitcake, was gone.
.
A slice of leftover ham and turkey-
Was the next delight, to be.
.
Once more the fruitcake was out of touch-
For we knew that we didn’t like it very much.
.
After all of the other treats were done-
It looked like the fruitcake, alone, was the only one.
.
As we approached it, we began to shiver-
But, opted instead, to one small sliver.
.
And, before you knew it, we had eaten it all-
No one would admit it though, it wasn’t our call.
.
The next year as we ate a piece of fudge-
Away, from the fruitcake, we would not budge.
.
For it tasted pretty good even though it had a
bad reputation-
Like generations, before us, it is now a sensation.
.
The Christmas fudge went first-
As soon as I saw it, I knew that I was cursed.

Santa Claus was running late-
For he had to catch up on some
old Christmas movies, that he
hadn’t seen, as of late.
.
First there was “The Magic Christmas Tree”-
Made in 1964, where there were three wishes to be.
.
And, in 1941, “The Night Before Christmas”-
Where many battles between Tom and Jerry,
they did merrily amass.
.
Next came “Scrooge”, so many versions there
came to be-
One made in 1935, one made in 1951, and
a musical in 1970.
,
“Prancer” made in 1989-
Where a girl nurses a reindeer, and makes
him well and fine.
.
“Twas the Night Before Christmas” had
to be seen-
An oldie, made back in 1914.
.
“Miracle on 34th Street, Santa knew well-
For back in 1947, he sat and watched it
for a spell.
.
Santa had seen “A Christmas Carol” made in
1938, so many times through the years-
First, it brought sadness, then it brought
cheers.
.
Santa knew that he was on a schedule,
but, to see a few more-
So many Christmas movies had been
made, it was hard for him to get out the door.
.
“Elf” in 2003, especially made Santa laugh-
As a matter of fact, it tickled his whole
toy making staff.
.
In 1990, “Home Alone” Santa could remember
when-
So much action was performed by that little Kevin.
.
“How the Grinch stole Christmas” in 1966-
Was a favorite for the kids, and one of Santa’s
special picks.
.
Another movie that Santa had to watch and address-
Was that magical one, 2004’s “The Polar Express”.
.
Time was running out, it was about time to go-
But, just one more for Santa, from a long time ago.
.
“It’s A Wonderful Life” in 1946, starring that
George Bailey-
Santa always tried, but, at the end, there were always
so many tears of joy, to see.
.
After wiping his eyes, he set out to ready the reindeer-
To set out on Christmas Eve, with the sky so bright
and clear.
.
Santa Claus was running late-
