As a rule-

It is a bit scary, on the first day of school.

Everything is brand new-

With new friends, to acrue.

New teachers and a new place-

Time to get comfortable, in this

unfamiliar place.

New school supplies, that must be put away-

For use later, on another day.

To grit one’s teeth, to make the day through-

To finally go home, and say a big whew.

For the second day will be A-ok-

We know where we’re going, because

we went through all of that on the first day.

As a rule-

It is a bit scary, on the first day of school.

Gertie went to the eye doctor, for she could not skirt-

The fact that there was a problem with her vision, and her eye did hurt.

She was a happy girl, that did well in school-

She did what she was supposed to, she followed the golden rule.

But, this eye problem had gotten out of hand, and her mother did not think twice-

Made her an appointment, to get some medical advice.

After many tests, the news was not good-

Her eye had to be removed, the doctor did the best he could.

Gertie at first did not take this well-

But, she began to accept the circumstances, after a spell.

She began to adjust to just having the one eye-

It was rough, at first, she would not lie.

A glass eye is what she needed, but, it took a bit of time-

For the funding was hard to come by, with much reason and rhyme.

The worst part, of this story, is when she returned back to class-

So much mockery she did happen to amass.

A one eyed monster and other names she heard, in the background-

So much rudeness and inconsiderate remarks, is what she found.

We send our children, to school, so that they can learn-

But, obviously in the art of learning, to be a human being there is no concern.

Shame on those who made fun of Gertie, who had done well in adjusting, to
